stomach cramps can be quite uncomfortable and add to complications from constipation.
This may be cured by swallowing two teaspoons of fengruk (methi) followed by few spoons of water.
Generally pain vanishes in 10-15 minutes. this method has been used for five generations.

needless to say that people having allergy to methi need to avoid this.

Methi (fingruk) for Stomach cramps

stomach cramps can be quite uncomfortable and add to complications from constipation

take two tea spoons of dry methi (fingruk) seeds and swallow them
drink a few sips of water after that
within 10-15 minutes there is a relief from cramps.
This has been tried many times in our home and almost always had good results.
i remember hearing this advice from my mother in 1950s  and we have used it for our grand children in 2010.

needless to say that people having allergy to methi need to avoid this  .

Yoga to control Blood pressure (hypertension)

Yoga is undoubtedly one of the greatest gifts to mankind by ancient Hindu culture.
ancient Rushis(sages who must also have been physicists, mathematicians  and Doctors) have explained in great details about benefits of Yoga on Human mind, soul and body.
They have always insisted that body is a temple and must be kept in best condition for the soul to attain highest goals inlife.

Patanjali rushi has written about Ashtang Yoga (eight steps of Yoga) . pranayam (breathing techniques ) and asans (bending body in various postures ) are one of these steps .  it has been proven beyond doubt that they help imrove focus, concentration and improve oxygen intake and distribution of it to all the cells in body. (oxygen is known as pranvayu in sanskrit meaning the gas that sustains life form)  .

Ramdev swami has made the pranayam popular in recent years in india and has re-established the benefits with medical records .
the medical world has known about these benefits since long (there are recorded . but have ignored it .

here is an article published in may-2013  : The results of the study were presented last week here at the American Society of Hypertension (ASH) 2013 Scientific Sessions.  shows clearly that yoga can reduce hypertension and reduce requirement for medication .
if a similar feat was achieved by a new medicine the same news would have made headlines. however for some unknown reasons, many in medical profession would prefer that instead of benefiting from yoga we should continue to use the medicines.
i have reproduced some part of the paper. you may follow the link to read the whole paper

"We know with prehypertension it is a risk factor for cardiovascular events, so in these people yoga would definitely have a benefit," lead investigator Dr Debbie Cohen (University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia) told heartwire
Excited by the results
To heartwire, Cohen explained that there are a number of studies that have addressed the benefits of yoga therapy on blood pressure. In fact, one of the first studies was published as far back as 1975 in the Lancet, but the medical community hasn't really embraced yoga to date. As a result, many other trials are of poor design and of limited use given the quality issues.

In fact, the US Food and Drug Administrationhas approved one device (RESPeRATE, InterCure) as an adjunctive to lower blood pressure. The device is designed to help train patients to slow their respiration and ultimately, lower their blood pressure. The mechanisms underlying the reduction in blood pressure are complex, said Brook, and to date there are no long-term data supporting its use. The evidence to support device-guided breathing is classified IIa, level of evidence B.
Brook said there is concern that patients get their medical advice from television, specificallyDr Mehmet Oz, and stop their use of medication. Breathing techniques to lower blood pressure are considered appropriate in prehypertensive patients, untreated stage 1 hypertension patients with no indication for drug therapy, and as a possible adjuvant to step-down drug therapy, said Brook.

it seems that instead of teaching yoga, they would want us to use machines made by them to get the same affect. then everyone will be happy - people for using a "modern technique" and  profession for making money out of selling something which is available for free in first place.

i would suggest to everyone to learn and practice yoga regularly and get beenfits without waiting further.
if you need proof, talk to thousands of people in India who have benefited.

risk of bungee jumping

Is The Jump Worth The Thrill?

Risks of Bungee Jumping

Beyond the obvious fall to their death, most people aren't aware of the risks of bungee jumping. Thusfar, there have been a half-dozen deaths and nearly as many critical injuries attributed to bungee jumping. Since this is a relatively new sport, this is a significant number and should make clear for anyone considering jumping that it is quite risky indeed. While how well the bungee jumping equipment is maintained and overseen for its safety factors plays a large role in preventing deaths, there are a number of health risks associated with the sport itself.

Deaths and critical injuries generally occur as a result of improperly maintained equipment or miscalculations of cord length. A death from massive cranial trauma occurred in 1997, for example, from improperly handled cords. The victim was a female member of a professional bungy jumping team. However, even with the most stringent safety precautions, it is not possible to eliminate risks of injury, especially those which are actually associated with the sport of bungee jumping.

One of the most significant risks of bungee jumping particular to women is that of uterine prolapse. It is said that the speed and pressure of the jumping can cause the uterus to not only tip but, in some cases, slide out of its normal location and even out of the body itself. This, naturally, is very dangerous and potentially life-threatening.

Eye trauma is another very serious health risk associated with this sport. One of the most dangerous types of eye trauma associated with jumping is retinal hemorrhage; this presents a very real possibility of losing one's eyesight. Another type of eye injury involved with this sport is the possibility of orbital emphysema, which can also result in permanent loss of vision. On a slightly-lesser scale, but still noteworthy risks of bungee jumping, are basic injuries to the eyes and their surrounding tissues.

Other health risks of bungee jumping vary in their severity. While such injuries as bruises and rope burn may be thought to be rather minor, dislocations and back injuries can range from moderate to disabling.

How to prevent memory loss - Brain Exercise and Hindu culture

Experts suggest that specific brain exercises can prevent memory loss and other brain related diseases.
an excellent book "Keep your brain alive" by Dr. Lawrence Katz, Ph.D gives practical advice on using various faculties of body and brain to keep bran active .
A major emphasis is on creating new "connections"  between neurons by social and human interactions which takes us away from set routines.
They advice to create additional "brain cell activity" using various exercises that which can help generate chemicals and hormones necessary to keep brain cells healthy and may even generate new cells.

We find that our ancient ways of living and praying automatically involves many of these activites in our day to day life.

suggestion : Increased Social interactions

we lived in a joint family where new members are constantly being added and the extended family gets rather large. this automatically created huge number of interaction with lots and lots of people.

Suggestion : Breaking from routine

living in a joint family also means that there are always kids in the house. Adults tend to "set in routine0" and may not provide much variation to brain cells. children are always learning and trying new things. close interaction with children ensures that life is never a "set routine"

Suggestion : Use multiple faculties

They suggest that reading a book aloud will make a larger part of brains to work compared to simple reading because brain will have to do additional control work for speaking. this activity will create additional connections and associations in brain as against simple reading.

We read , and recite  thousands of shlokas / Mantras . this ensures that we associate reading with memorizing and also use extra brain cells to "pronounce " right words .  the complex structure of vedic mantras also ensures that brain cells work harder at deciphering and memorizing the mantras.

Hazards of reusing cooking oil

Heating of oil to deep frying temperature can laed to degeneration of oil molecules. many believe that this is a major source for saturated fat (which in turn increases bad cholesterol)
It is common for most hotels and restaurants to reuse the oil left over from deep frying of food. cost saving and convenience of handling can be the reason for this. fortunately they consume a lot of oil and it is hoped that most oil gets burned off or gets absorbed in food before it becomes a health hazard.

The problem is different at home. cost is of course a consideration for most households and any suggestion for using oil only once is bound to be rejected by most housewives.
also it is quite uncommon for normal house hold to deep fry daily , so chances are that the oil will not get reused for many weeks . the problem of reusing oil gets worse when the same is stored for extended periods.

so hear are some suggestions to keep in mind if you choose to reuse cooking oil

1. as soon as oil cools to room temperature, filter it using coffee filter (multiple layers of paper) to remove any food particle that is  floating in oil . this will avoid bacteria being formed on these food particles .
2. do not mix this oil with fresh oil . store this oil in a separate label the date on which this oil is first used and try and use it within a few
please check the details on
